In order to qualify for life insurance coverage with high blood pressure, the life insurance company will assess your risk through underwriting.

If your life insurance coverage requires you to take a medical exam, the examiner will take 3 blood pressure readings which will provide the underwriter with an average of your blood pressure.

Along with blood pressure readings, the examiner will ask if you have a history of high blood pressure as well as details as to how long you have had high blood pressure, how you are currently treating it and what medications you are currently using.

Some cases will require the underwriter to request medical records from the doctor who treats your blood pressure, in order to help with their assessment.

NOTE:
If you don’t take any medications, don’t panic. If you have slight to moderately elevated blood pressure you most likely will qualify for coverage but at a high health classification which is discussed below.
