**IMPORTANT ARTICLE UPDATE**
Since the original posting of this article there has been several changes. On 03/06/2017 MetLife discontinued all sale of their retail life insurance business. The life insurance business was taken over by Brighthouse Financial. Brighthouse Financial offers an excellent term life insurance coverage option and even offers the same military underwriting benefits that MetLife did. However, Brighthouse Financial has a minimum death benefit of $1,000,000 when applying for their term life insurance coverage.

As a former United States Marine, I know that it can be a difficult process to get life insurance coverage outside of the military. The Service Members Group Life Insurance (SGLI) program is a great benefit provided to our military members, but it limits the amount of life insurance coverage you can get at $400,000. What options are there if you need more?
At the start of the 2001 War in Afghanistan, it was near impossible to get any life insurance company to underwrite an active duty military life insurance policy. With many soldiers deploying overseas to the Middle East to fight in the war on terror, life insurance companies considered all military personal to be too large of a risk to insure.
Fast forward to present time, and you can now find a handful of life insurance companies that will consider underwriting an active duty military life insurance policy. However, if you have orders to deploy or even in some cases work in a high risk MOS, you can find yourself once again having a very hard time getting a life insurance policy outside of the military.

MetLife Life Insurance Coverage Options for Military Members
MetLife offers a wide array of very affordable life insurance products such as term life, fixed premium universal life and whole life insurance. Anyone of these life insurance coverage options can be very helpful in supplementing your current life insurance coverage that is provided by the SGLI.
TERM LIFE INSURANCE: MetLife offers term life insurance in fixed premium lengths of 10, 15, 20 & 30 years with a minimum coverage amount of $100,000. Along with very affordable rates, MetLife term policies have optional policy as well as a conversion feature that allows you to switch to permanent life insurance plan without the need of medical underwriting.
GUARANTEED UNIVERSAL LIFE: One of the permanent life insurance options offered by MetLife is their guaranteed universal life insurance. GUL is fixed premium permanent life insurance. Once you purchase this type of life insurance coverage you will never need to worry about the price changing or ever having to go through medical underwriting again. Like MetLife’s term coverage their GUL coverage also has optional policy riders that you can add to your coverage. The minimum amount of coverage available for MetLife’s GUL is $50,000.
WHOLE LIFE INSURANCE: A second type of permanent life insurance offered by MetLife is their whole life insurance. Whole life insurance offers fixed premiums as well as guaranteed cash values. Whole life insurance also has the potential to earn dividends which can be used as cash, reduced premiums or paid up insurance.
